Diet workshop

The Diet Workshop is a weight loss program based mainly in the north eastern United States. The diet workshop is delivered by people who have graduated from the program.

The Diet Workshop approach to weight loss

• Approach/Method: Program consists of diet, exercise, and behavior modification. Diets range from between 1200 to 2600 calories and 27 to 40 grams of fat per day. Menus follow the Food Guide Pyramid. The purchase of special foods is optional.

• Clients: Mostly female (80%), ranging in age from 25 to 65 years.

• Staff: The weight-loss program was developed by a team of registered dietitians, a registered nurse, a physician, and a licensed psychologist. The program is delivered by Diet Workshop graduates. Leaders must complete a three week training program which covers nutrition, weight-loss dynamics, customer service, and presentation. Ongoing training for the staff involves 96 to 100 hours each year.

• Expected Weight Loss/Length of Program: Weight loss of one to two pounds per week. Length of program is determined by the amount of weight the client needs to lose. A minimum of three months' participation is recommended.

• Cost: Program costs range from $12 to $34 per week. The three-month behavior modification program costs $169. A one- to three-month extension is available for $49/month. There is no charge for a maintenance program; when a client reaches his/her goal weight, attendance at Diet Workshop is free

It must be noted that in 1996 diet workshop settled with the FTC over making weight loss claims that were deceptive

from the FTC website:

According to the complaint detailing the charges, advertising for Diet Workshop's programs included claims such as:

  • “Join the millions who have learned how to become thin for life using Diet Workshop's nutritionally balanced weight-loss programs”;
  • “Lose up to 20 Lbs. in 6 weeks!”;
  • “In 1982, I lost 32 pounds. I'm still thin today. You can be thin, too!”; and
  • “...you are assured that your QUICK LOSS is permanent loss.”
